GENERAL The San Antonio Community Development Corporation (SACDC), was incorporated on July 9, l980 as a nonprofit organization. The membership is comprised of small business owners or managers, professionals, residents, and community oriented persons who live or own businesses in the San Antonio District. The San Antonio CDC is an outgrowth of the neighborhood's local community
development district council. It was developed as an avenue to
promote and facilitate community economic development activities, i.e.,
to produce affordable housing, to revitalize neighborhood commercial
districts, and to assist local entrepreneurs in the provision of services
to their community.
The agency has successfully completed new construction on rental housing units and rehabilitated an abandoned fire house into a community center and offices, housing Senior and Head Start Programs. SACDC leads the grassroots Oakland community with their progressive planning, development and implementation capabilities in housing and commercial revitalization projects. They have also led community development districts citywide in supporting single parent households with child care grants for those returning to school, enrolled in vocational education or job training programs, or with low incomes and needing child care subsidies in order to remain employed. They also operate a tutorial program to upgrade the academic skills of elementary school children in the San Antonio District. SACDC has created an economic development plan for the 23rd Avenue/East 14th Street Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization (NCR) area. The project was designed to improve commercial property and bring to the area businesses that will provide essential goods and services to the surrounding residential community. In 1997 the San Antonio District was selected by the Koshland Committee of the San Francisco Foundation to receive awards both for the neighborhood and for outstanding residents, among them SACDC'S John Gruntfest and Don Davenport. Accompanying the committee, Sandor Straus gave SACDC $25,000 from the Straus Family Fund to further the development of a Village Center at Roosevelt Middle School. The Koshland neighborhood grant will total $300,000 over five years, including $10,000 for promoting the 23rd Avenue/East 14th Street NCR Collaborative's efforts. You now have direct access to local, federal, and state officials using E-The People. Voice your concerns and be heard.
